I'm pretty sure it can only be used once. I have seen on other boards that even if they do let you use a code twice (one that's meant for one-time use), they will bill your credit card for the full amount later.

Christmas Draw

Our big New Year draw is on Saturday next 3 January. This is always a big event and one of the big final nights of the Christmas season. Please return all tickets to Treasurer, Anne Shanley or any of the Club officers by Thursday evening.

Opening of Pitch

Sunday 24 May 2009 will be a big day for the club with the  official re-opening of Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin. There are plans to have major celebrations on that weekend and the Uachtaráin of the GAA, Christy Cooney will be present. For Ballinamore people this is a day for the diaries. Beidh níos mó eolais ag teacht de réir a chéile

Scór na nÓg

The Co finals of Scór na nÓg will be in Manorhamilton on Sunday next 4 January starting at 3.00. Seán O’Heslins will have major interest with Rince Foirne, Rince Seit, Bailéad Ghrúpa, Nuachleas and Trath na gCeist all involved.

Irish Conversation

The Ciorcal Comhrá – Irish Conversation evenings will start in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday 13 January at 8.30. Anyone interested please give name to the Library by calling or ringing 9645582. This year there will be a beginners group. (Library will reopen on Saturday 3 Jan )

Sean O’Heslins Website – 5 bhliain ar an saol

Our club website is now five years running. The weekly notes, in particular are proving of great interest to our players and supporters who are away from home but of course they are read by many people at home also as the news is available on Monday nights, ahead of the Leitrim Observer on the Wednesday. The numbers viewing the site on a weekly basis have increased considerably and the numbers are going up all the time. It varies greatly from week to week. The highest number of hits occurred on a week last April when there was some technical hitch and the notes were not updated and people were obviously accessing the site several times to see if it is back working. However, on a normal week the highest number of visits to the site in any week was on the week finishing Monday 29 September last when it was visited 190 times. That is 27 times a day on average. What happened on that week? Was it the senior championship or something big happening? Well no, in fact if you look at the notes for 22 September it was about the slackest week of the year, with only one junior match reported. Maybe people thought there was something missing and kept coming back looking!!!!

Anyway keep reading. Another significant development through the web site is the Lotto on Line. While we would like to see many more people joining the Lotto on Line, it is taking in about €1000 a year which is fairly good.

Pósadh

Best wishes to Paul Prior and Michelle Kelleher who are getting married tomorrow Tuesday.

Lotto

Next Lotto is on Monday 5 January in Jackie’s. Pota Óir is €4,600

Scéalta Na Seachtaine –  22 Nollaig 2008

Oughteragh Gaels win Under 21 Championship

For the third time in four years, Oughteragh Gaels have taken the Under 21 Championship. In terrible weather they held out for victory by a single point in Páirc Seán on Saturday. It was a tough battle from start to finish and there was very little in it. Indeed Gaels were lucky to hold out in the final ten minutes. Glencar Manor started better and went a couple of points ahead. Points from Damien Gilheaney (free) and Gavin Sammon brought us back into it and then a goal finished by Fergal Earley turned out to be the deciding factor in the game. Damien Gilheaney pointed another free and Oughteragh Gaels led by 1-3 to 0-4 at half time.

Three quick points from Gavin Sammon, a free from Damien Gilheaney and one from Wayne McKeon suggested that Oughteragh Gaels were going to win this game easily. However, it was Glencar/Manor that took over from there on and they got within a point but just could not get the equalizer. A final point from Gavin Sammon proved the winner in the end. It finished 1-7 to 0-9. The trophy was presented to the winning captain, James McWeeney by Cathaoirleach, Gerry McGovern after the game.  (Photographs will be included on next Friday in pictures section)

Foireann: Philip Farrelly (B), Seán McWeeney (A), David Leyden (B), Joe Murphy (B), Joseph McGirl (A), Jim McTague (B), Philip Murphy (B), Wayne McKeon (B) (0-1), Fergal McManus (A), Brendan Mulvey (A), Damien Gilheaney (A) (0-3f), Gavin Sammon (A) (0-3), James McWeeney (B), Cathal Egan (A), Fergal Earley (A)(1-0). Subs Shane Murphy (B) for B Mulvey, Paul Earley (A) for Joe Murphy, Brendan Mulvey for James McWeeney.

Opening of Pitch

Sunday 24 May 2009 has been set for the official re-opening of Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin. There are plans to have major celebrations on that weekend and the Uachtaráin of the GAA, Christy Cooney will be present. For Ballinamore people this is a day for the diaries. Christmas Draw

Our big New Year draw is on Saturday week 3 January. Please return all tickets to Treasurer, Anne Shanley or any of the Club officers by Thursday evening.

Comhbhrón

The club extends sympathy to the Breen Family, Aghadark on the sudden death of Barney Breen on Saturday last. Barney and Josie Breen and all of the family have had a major involvement in the Seán O’Heslins club since they came to Ballinamore in the 1970s. Sympathy also to the Williams family, Corrachole on the death of Patricia Williams last week. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad.

Painting Resumes

Painting of the dressingrooms and other work re-commences on Tuesday 30 December at 10.00. Anyone who can help will be welcome. Tools will be provided and lots of advice!!! See pictures of Meitheal in progress on our website under Pictures/ Pitch

Irish Conversation

The Ciorcal Comhrá – Irish Conversation evenings will start in Ballinamore Library on Tuesday 13 January at 8.30. Anyone interested please give name to the Library by calling or ringing 9645582. (Library will be closed 24 Dec to 2 Jan inclusive)

AGM

Our AGM was well- attended with over 50 present on Sunday last. It was a very constructive and positive meeting with many matters discussed. Outgoing Cathaoirleach Adrian MacGabhann set the tone for the meeting with a very well thought-out Cathaoirleach’s address. He pointed out the successes like achieving promoting to Div 1 of the League, a good championship performance, victories for the ladies and the hurlers in different competitions, success in Scór and above all, great progress on the pitch and dressingrooms and stand.

Cisteoir, Ann Shanley, showed the huge financial outlay of the club. Expenditure of €844,473 in the year. Fundraising will be top of the agenda for the club in 2009. A number of fundraising proposals were mentioned at the meeting.

It was decided, after much discussion, to declare the official name of the club as Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins. Membership has been increased to €30 for adults and €10 for underage players. Players are reminded that they cannot play for the club or be involved in any club activity, such as Scór, if they have not paid up-to-date membership. It was also decided to run a club Dinner Dance in 2009.

Under 21s in Championship Final

Oughteragh Gaels qualified for the under 21 final by beating Drumlea in the semi-final last Saturday evening. It was a fairly comprehensive win and at all stages they were the dominant team apart from a short spell in the first half. A point from Damien Gilheaney and pointed frees from Damien Gilheaney and James McWeeney put us 0-3 to 0-0 up early on. However, three pointed frees from Drumlea levelled it up but that was as near as Drumlea got. Damien Gilheaney pointed three frees and good points from Fergal Earley and Cathal Egan especially, put us 0-9 to 0-3 up at half-time. While Oughteragh Gaels didn’t score as much in the second half they were never in any danger and won by 0-13 to 0-5 in the end.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joseph Murphy, David Leyden, Seán McWeeney, Joe McGirl, Jim McTague, Philip Murphy, Fergal McManus, Wayne McKeon, James McWeeney (0-3, 2f), Damien Gilheaney (0-5 4f), Gavin Sammon, Shane Murphy, Cathal Egan (0-1), Fergal Earley (0-3). Subs: Brendan Mulvey (0-1), Paul Earley.

Scór na nÓg

We had great participation in the Scór na nÓg semi finals last weekend. We had no less than three groups in Rince Foirne, three in Rince Seit, three in Tráth na gCeist, two in Bailéad Ghrúpa, one in Ceol Uirlise and one in Nuachleas. Oddly enough the only thing we hadn’t was a solo singer and a recitation. Overall we had the biggest representation of any club in the county. Out of this we qualified in Rince Foirne, Bailéad Ghrúpa, Trath na gCeist, Nuachleas and Rince Seit.

In Rince Foirne, Ballinamore A were represented by: Niamh Griffin, Orla McWeeney, Gráinne Griffin, Alison Sweeney, Sarah Beth Reilly, Laura O Dowd, Aoibheann Flynn, Eadaoin McGourty. Ballinamore B were represented by: Aisling O Dowd, Niamh McGourty, Caoimhe McCaffrey, Maeve Gleeson, Siobháin McTague, Niamh Flynn, Ellen Wrynn, Lisa McGuire. Ballinamore C were represented by Maeve Hamill, Elaoishe Martin, Grace Wrynn, Leanne Flynn, Katie Cullen, Margot Delphis, Leah Sweeney, and Emily Sweeney. Ballinamore B qualified for the finals.

In Ceol Uirlise we had: Lisa Maguire, Ailish O Dowd, Leanne Flynn, Niamh McGourty, Frances Farry. We had two groups in Bailéad Ghrúpa: the first was Dervla Smith, Katie Duignan, Ciara Martin, Ciara O Dowd, Lauren McGrory. This group are in the finals. The second group was: Lisa Maguire, Ailish O Dowd, Leanne Flynn, Niamh McGourty, and Frances Farry.

In Trath na gCeist we also had three groups. In the A group: Kevin Banks, Jack Bagge and Daniel Gallagher. In the B group: Stephen McTague, Jack Cullen and Conor Maxwell and in the C Group: Shane Moran, Eoin McHugh, Luke Murphy. Rather surprisingly it was the C team that qualified for the finals.  We qualified for the Novelty Act finals with: Eoin McHugh, Conor McTague, Stephen McTague, Brian Beirne, John Fanning, Dean Creaven, Mark McGrory. In Rince Seit we also had three groups: In the A team: Niamh Griffin, Orla McWeeney, Eadaoin McGourty, Sarah Beth Reilly, Maeve Gleeson, Niamh Flynn, Ellen Wrynn, Siobháin McTague. This team qualified for the finals. In the B team: Alison Sweeney, Gráinne Griffin, Caoimhe McCaffrey, Aoibheann Flynn, Leanne Flynn, Ailish O Dowd, Emily Sweeney, Niamh McGourty. Finally the C team was: Grace Wrynn, Katie Cullen, Elaoishe Martin, Leah Sweeney, Margot Delphis, Aoife Murphy, Katie Reynolds, Cait Connaughton. Seniors Lose Division 2 Final

It was as dramatic a final as any witnessed between Aughawillan and Seán O’Heslins in the past and the result as in doubt to the final whistle. It was a disappointment to lose particularly because we were the better team for three quarters of the game but were left to rue missed chances in the end. Aughawillan had the better start and got four points before we knew where we were. However the second quarter belonged to O’Heslins and to be behind by 0-7 to 0-1 at half time was no reflection on the course of the game. While Aughawillan were pointing frees, we missed four normally very scorable frees with both Finnian Sharpley and Wayne McKeon off target and when Finnian Sharpley did everything right to set himself up for goal it went narrowly wide.

Despite being six points in arrears, our performance in the second half was nothing short of brilliant. The comeback started early when David Duignan pointed. Then we got excellent points from Wayne McKeon, Finnian Sharpley, Ciaran Murray and David Duignan again. Finnian Sharpley pointed a free for our first success from a placed ball. Then Finnian Sharpley pointed two astonishing frees to fully redeem himself for the first half misses. That brought us level at 0-9 each. Aughawillan had a chance to seal it with a goal but Philip Farrelly brought off an excellent save. However, Aughawillan were holding on all through the second half with pointed frees and Morgan Quinn made no mistake from a last minute free to put them ahead. Wayne McKeon was inches wide form a long range free with the final kick of the game. Overall we hardly deserved to lose and our performance was little short of what it was in the previous meeting. The big difference was the shots on target. Congratulations to Aughawillan, not for the first time they took it from us in close finishes. It ended 0-10 to 0-9.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, John McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Liam Ferguson, Jim McTague, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan (0-2), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Paul McLoughlin, Anthony McTague, Finnian Sharpley (0-4), Brian Cafferty (0-1), Sean Murray, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Shane Murphy. Sub: James McWeeney for A McTague.

Minor Hurlers win Championship

Ballinamore hurlers won the Minor Hurling Championship for the first time since 1994 when they beat St Mary’s by six points on Sunday morning. It was a closer game than expected and there was five points in it at half time. However, St Mary’s came back within a point and it was a goal from Eoin McHugh which ensured victory.

The shield was presented to the Ballinamore Captain, Brendan Mulvey by Cathaoirleach of Coiste Iomána Liatroma, Paddy Phelan. It has been a very successful two weeks on the hurling front with the Under 16s winning the Championship a week earlier.

Foireann: Joe Earley, Donal Flynn, Paddy McManus, Paul Earley, James Gallagher, Seán McWeeney, Shane Moran, Morgan Quinn, Brendan Mulvey, Shane McWeeney, Keith Boyle, Éamon Walsh, Dean Creaven, Shane Flanagan, Eoin McHugh. Subs: Matthew Murphy, Colm McGirl.

Naming Rights for stand and dressingrooms

The club is interested in offering sponsorship opportunities for the naming of the stand and dressingrooms and would like to hear from interested parties. The new stand in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada has been named Ardán Mhic Shamhráin and the Seán O’Heslins club would be interested in a similar arrangement. Likewise if anyone is interested in having the function room, gym room or dressingrooms named in any manner, please contact Conor Harte or Tommy Moran as soon as possible.

Advertising Signage

It is proposed to have advertising signage along the perimeter of the main pitch as is common in many grounds. The Finance Committee would like to hear from individuals or companies who would be interested in having their business or service advertised in this way. Please contact Adrian Smith or Gordon Hughes if interested.

Trust Fund

A number of people have expressed an interest in giving money to the Trust Fund. With the dressingrooms/stand almost finished there is an urgent need to get as much money as possible through the Trust Fund in loans to the club. We would ask all of those who have been approached and who have indicated an interest in helping in this way to please contact Tom Burns, Conor Harte or Joey Smith immediately.

Leitrim Minor Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Sean O’Heslins were defeated by Manorhamilton on Sunday last in the Park by 1 point on scoreline of 1-6 to 1-5, in bad weather conditions. Playing with the wind in the first half, Manor raced to a 5 point lead at half time with both sides recording bad wides. Sean O’Heslins pulled 3 points back but against the run of play Manor scored 1-01 to put them 6 points clear. However 2 points for O’Heslins and a great goal by Brendan Mulvey in the last minute of the game meant that Sean O’Heslins secured a final spot, on score difference, against St. Mary’s to be played on Sunday 30 th November. The final is in the Park on Sunday next at 11.00

Team: Joe Earley, Paul Earley, Donal Flynn, Matthew Murphy, Shane Moran, Sean McWeeney (0-1), Aiden Dolan, Morgan Quinn (0-3), Brendan Mulvey (1-1), Shane McWeeney, Keith Boyle, Éamon Walsh, Dean Creaven, James Gallagher, Colm McGirl.

Death of Willie McKiernan

Willie  “Pháidín” McKiernan died in Toronto, Canada recently. Willie was  a major link with the Ballinamore team the won a historic senior championship for Ballinamore in 1956. That particular year was significant because it was the club’s first senior win in 17 years. Willie was a native of Aughavas but ran a pub where Jackie’s is now. He was a well known Aughavas footballer but in 1956, along with Jackie Gallagher, he was convinced to transfer from his home club Aughavas, to Ballinamore. Jackie Gallagher often recounts meeting Willie when the two of them had decided to throw in their lot with Ballinamore. Willie’s comment was “It is a sight to leave a good team and join a bad one”. However, before the year was out Ballinamore were senior champions but there is no doubt the two new recruits were a big addition to Ballinamore. Willie was a great Gaelic organiser as well and a hurling man too. In 1956 he was largely responsible for a team called “Aughavas” winning the senior hurling championship. As far as we know he was the only Aughavas man on it apart from Dick Culhane, a Kerryman who had previously taught school in Aughavas. Thus 1956 was an eventful year for Willie McKiernan as he won a senior double in football and hurling. Sadly emigration beckoned in the difficult years of the 1950s. A number of the 1956 team left: Pat Crossan for England, Pat Murray for America and Willie McKiernan for Canada. The club extends sympathy to Willie’s family and relations. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air. (Willie is pictured in the photo of the 1956 team under pictures: third photo down – 1956 team)

This was our first visit to Lawrences since Ossie Costello took over and the club sends best wishes to Ossie in his new venture. It is great to see the crowds coming to out Lotto night. Last week we counted over 40 people present and it is a social occasion every Monday night. People meet each other and it is a short enjoyable night out for many associated with Seán O’Heslins. Seniors beat Ballinaglera

Our seniors put in a very spirited performance against a strong Ballinaglera challenge in the Park on Sunday morning. The game was fairly even in the first half with our points coming from Anton Arandelovic, Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague and Shane Murphy. We had two setbacks in the half when Wayne McKeon’s penalty was saved and when Anton Arandelovic was sent off. Half Time Sean O’Heslins 0-5, Ballinaglera 0-3.

However, Ballinaglera never got going in the second half and the extra man didn’t seem to work for them. We got points from Wayne McKeon, Shane Murphy, two from Finnian Sharpley and their final score from Ciaran Murray with seven minutes to go. Ballinaglera registered their only score of the second half on the 55 th minute. We defended well throughout and Ciaran Murray, Shane Murphy and Finnian Sharpley put in some solid displays. Final Score, Sean O’Heslins 0-10, Ballinaglera 0-4. The final is the weekend after next against Aughawillan.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Johnny McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Paddy McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Paul McLoughlin, Wayne McKeon (0-1), Anthony McTague (0-1), Ciaran Murray (0-1), Brian Cafferty (0-2), Finnian Sharpley (0-3, 2f), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1). Subs Sean Murray for A. McTague, David Leyden for B. Cafferty.

 Minor League

Our minors were beaten by a single point in the Minor League, 13 a side final last Friday. The final score was 1-9 to 1-8. This was an outstanding performance considering that Glencar/Manorhamilton easily beat the Oughteragh Gaels combination in the Championship. See report in Observer for further details.

Great Meitheal of Painters

We had a great response to the painting of the stand/dressingrooms for the past few weeks. On Saturday last we had 14 people there for the morning and great progress was made. There is still lots of work to be done. Buíochas mór to all who have helped so far and we hope to see a good crowd there for the next few weeks. Indeed another 3-4 weeks should see us through. With major debt on the development, the painting by voluntary labour will save the club a lot of money.

Scealta Na Seachtaine –  3 Samhain 2008

Lá stairiúil in Achadh an Mhuilinn

There have been historic meetings between Aughawillan and Ballinamore over the decades but not many, in recent times, have had as much significance as last Sunday morning’s win in Aughawillan. It wasn’t just the fact that we won or that we beat “an sean namhaid”, but the result means that after seven barren years in Division 2 we are back in Division 1 for 2009.

How did it all happen seven years ago? Well, on 30 September 2001 we played St Mary’s in the final Division 1 game of the season. Whatever hope we had of surviving in Division 1 hinged on us beating the unbeaten St Mary’s but it also depended on other results. The biggest crowd in ages turned up to Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on that Sunday, some to see us winning and some to see us losing. Our notes of the time said there were 150 people in the Park that day. We beat St Mary’s by 0-14 to 0-13 with a great performance, but soon news filtered through that Aughavas had beaten Drumreilly and so our goose was cooked. It was a sad day in many ways as at that time the league determined which championship you played in and we were thus relegated to Intermediate Championship as well as Division 2 league. The year 2002 would therefore be the first time ever that Ballinamore were not in the Senior Championship, apart of course in years when they did not field at all. There was a minute’s silence before that game in memory of Christy Gallogly who had died some days earlier.

The team of 2001

It is interesting to look at the changes since 2001. The team on that last occasion when Sean O’Heslins played in Division 1 was as follows: Damien Crossan, Rory O’Rourke, Peter McLoughlin, Gavin Brennan, Jason Kellett, Joe Honeyman, John McWeeney, Ciaran Murray, Stephen Skelly, Seán Murray, Ciaran Mahon, Declan Murray, Brian Breen, Paul Kieran, Peter Dolan. Paul McLoughlin came on as a sub. Ollie Honeyman was Team manager at the time. Of the above 15, only three started on Sunday last; Joe Honeyman, Johnny McWeeney and Ciaran Murray, although Seán Murray came on as a sub on last Sunday. In September 2001 we also played an under 12 league Final the same week and lost to Manorhamilton. On that under 12 team were; Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy. Philip Farrelly was a sub. Those four were playing senior on Sunday. Sea, tá ré nua tagtha.

Our Fate since 2001

In 2002 we reached the Intermediate Final but lost to Kiltubrid. In the League of that year we reached a semi-final but lost to Kiltubrid also. By a stroke of luck we were promoted back to Senior Championship by default at the end of 2002. Somebody came up with the daft notion of having 20 clubs in the senior championship. Naturally we didn’t oppose it although it made no sense at all. It was passed by Convention in December 2002 and so we got back to senior championship in 2003 and have remained there since. However our League situation has been more of a problem. We have been in terrible hard luck for the past few years. In 2007 we were pipped on scores by Aughnasheelin in a bizarre final fixture. In 2006 we lost to Glencar/Manorhamilton in extra time in Aughnasheelin in a play-off after letting in a soft goal. In 2005 Aughawillan beat us in a final fixture to deny us promotion. In 2004 we were beaten out of sight in a desperate league campaign where we lost heavily to Aughnasheelin, Glencar/Manorhamilton and Drumkeerin in the final three fixtures.

  Seniors beat Aughawillan on Sunday

Along with our Championship performances against Mohill and St Mary’s in the drawn game this was one our best performances of the year. We needed to win to be absolutely sure of promotion but from early on we performed exceptionally well. It was a game where everyone did well. Joey Honeyman and Liam Ferguson were outstanding but all of the other backs did their bit as well. Wayne McKeon and Paul McLoughlin won well at midfield. Finnian Sharpley, Brian Cafferty and Anton Arandelovic were excellent with the other forwards not far behind. From early on we had more of the play but it was just 0-6 to 0-5 with only five minutes left in the first half. Then Finnian Sharpley and Brian Cafferty got two good points each to put us 0-9 to 0-5 up at half time. The second half performance was particularly good. Finnian Sharpley and Wayne McKeon pointed frees. Anton got an exceptional point. Finnian Sharpley pointed another free and then got one from play. Ciaran Murray and Brian Cafferty got points from play and finally pointed frees from Wayne McKeon and Anton Arandelovic. It finished 0-18 to 0-7.

Foireann; Philip Farrelly, John McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Liam Ferguson, Jim McTague, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Paul McLoughlin, Wayne McKeon (0-3), Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Brian Cafferty (0-4), Shane Murphy, Ciarán Murray (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-6). Subs: Seán Murray for B Cafferty, Gordon Hughes for J McTague, James McWeeney for Finnian Sharpley, Philip Murphy for David Duignan.

Ballinamore win INTO Mini Sevens

For the fifth year in a row Ballinamore Boys National school has won the Leitrim INTO mini sevens. The week before last they beat Mohill, Kinlough, Kiltubrid and Leitrim Village to win the title once again. This is an outstanding achievement. Comhghairdeas leis na buachaillí agus le Nollaig Mac Eoin, príomh-oide na scoile agus Séamus MacTadhg. The panel that won this famous victory was: Fergal Curran, Brian Leyden, Peter Reynolds, Dean McGovern, Niall McGovern, Donal Feely, Oisín McCaffrey, Mark O’Reilly, Paddy Connaughton and Ronan Maxwell.

Go n-éirí leat Ronan.

Ronan Sharpley played what will probably be his last game for Seán O’Heslins for some time. On Sunday he played against Aughawillan and he can head for El Salvador knowing he helped us back to Division 1 of the League after a barren seven years. Ronan’s contribution to our senior team will be missed but lets hope that when he returns we will have made further progress. Ronan will hopefully be able to keep in touch with our fortunes through our website. Go n-éirí leat Ronan.

3 in a row

Good to see our historic three-in-a-row team recalling the events of 1967-1967 recently. One of the highlights of that period was the historic trip to America in 1968. It was indeed a memorable period for the club.

Junior lose in C Championship Semi-final

Our Junior C team just missed out on a final spot by the narrowest of margins in Cloone on Sunday last. This was an excellent game with nothing between the sides all through. Peter Reynolds pointed a long-range free early on and Adrian Gallogly scored a good point but St Osnatts were three points up at one stage. However, three excellent pointed frees from Séan McCartin and a well finished point from James McWeeney, who had just come in as a sub, left it level at half time at 0-6 apiece. We were probably on the lucky side to be level at half time as St Osnatts had more chances and but for a couple good saves from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin in the goals we could have been more behind.

We had the majority of the possession in the second half but we just could not get through for enough scores. Seán McCartin got all of our second half scores, two pointed frees and one from play. The deciding score of the game was a lucky one for St Osnatts. A high ball was kicked in towards our goals and for all in the world was going wide just beyond the square. Someone got a fist to it and deflected it back into the square and it was finished to the net. Although there was fifteen minutes left the best we came was within a point and St Osnatts got a final point just before the whistle. It finished 1-8 to 0-9.

Overall it was a good performance and everyone tried their best. Our younger defenders; Seamus Donnelly, Neil Hughes and Éamon Walsh were excellent with the other trio not far behind. Joseph Murphy and Aidan Galligan played well at midfield. Peter Reynolds and Adrian Gallogly tried their best in attach but our man-of-the match was Seán McCartin at corner forward who probably had his best game since a day a few years ago when he scored three goals and a few points against the same opposition, St Osnatts in the Park. Best of luck to St Osnatts in the final and indeed they deserve a title this year after the past three years of heartbreaking defeats in the finals.

Foireann: Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Séamus Donnelly, Francis Dolan, Kieran Maxwell, Neil Hughes, Jason Kellett, Éamon Walsh, Adrian Gallogly, Joseph Murphy, Alan Prior, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Adrian Murphy, Daryl McFarland, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Seán McCartin (0-6). Subs: James McWeeney (0-1) for D McFarland. Ronan O’Rourke for Alan Prior.

Ballinamore win INTO Mini Sevens

For a dramatic fifth year in a row Ballinamore Boys National School has won the INTO mini 7s competition. This is an amazing achievement as the school is not very big in numbers. We hope to have a full report on their great win next week.

Ronan Sharpley heads for San Salvador

One of our prominent senior player, Ronan Sharpley is heading for far-away El Salvador this Sunday where he is about to undertake two years of what is described as Lay Missionary Work in what is one of the world’s poorest countries. Ronan is a Civil Engineer and along with a companion he will be involved in a building project and a water scheme. El Salvador is a Central American country the size of Munster but it has a population of 7 million people. He will be based in a beautiful mountainous area not far from the sea. We understand Ronan will be bringing some hurleys and sliotars with him and we will not be surprised if some of the young El Salvadorians will be pucking the ball back to him before long. We wish Ronan the best and he will be missed on the senior team while he is away. Go n-éirí leat Ronan.

Under 12 Lose Championship Final

In a dramatic final Seán O’Heslins put up a brave performance before losing by 4-8 to 3-6 to Drumreilly on Monday last. Drumreilly had the better of the first half and led by 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time. Drumreilly could have been further ahead as they hit a lot of wides. Early in the second half there was nine points between the sides but a dramatic come back with goals from Dean McGovern, Barry McGovern and Patrick Connaughton brought O’Heslins right back into the game. At one stage they led by a point but Drumreilly finished the stronger and deservedly won in the end. However it was great to see the team fighting back from such a deficit and was a much better performance that the league final early in the year.

Foireann: Fergal Curran, Daire Reynolds, Peter Reynolds, Mark O’Reilly, Sarah Beth Reilly, Brian Leyden, Róisín McHugh, Dean McGovern (1-0), Donal Feely (0-3), Daire McHugh, Paddy Connaughton (1-2), James Hamill, Niall McGovern, Luke Murphy (0-1), Barry McGovern (1-0). Subs: Conor Maxwell, Daire Maxwell, Oisín McCaffrey, Archie Williams, Killian Dooner, Adam Goldrick, Emma McGovern, Bláithín Sharpley

Sean O’Heslins under 16 girls win title

The Sean O’Heslins girls started off the brighter team and opened the score sheet with a great point.  They then settled into the game and seemed to be in control for the first part of the game with some great team work and great scores from play.  Gortletteragh then started to come back into game and scored a goal to leave a point between the two teams before half time.  Just minutes after the goal Gortletteragh hit back with a point to leave it all square just at half time.  The second half saw Gortletteragh taking control for the most part of the game and started to make things difficult for us.  We then slipped behind and Gortletteragh looked like they were on their way to win the Under 16 Title, but Sean O’Heslins turned the game around within the final few minutes.  We got a goal to leave it level, but O’Heslins didn’t want to leave Mohill without that Cup so with only a few minutes to spare two great points from play  put Ballinamore in front and only seconds away from winning the title they worked so hard for.  The game finished Sean O’Heslins 2-10 to Gortletteragh 3-5

It has been a great year for the Sean O’Heslins Ladies winning four titles from under 12s, the Junior League, Junior 9 aside League and to top the season off the Under 16s winning in great style last Friday evening in Mohill. Well done to all involved.

A couple of weeks ago Peter McLoughlin won a Warwickshire Intermediate Championship with his club St Mary’s Wolverhampton. They beat St Finbarr’s, Coventry in the final by 3-9 to 2-10. Interestingly, there were four Irish players on the team and the rest were native English-born players. Two years ago Peter also won a similar championship with the same club.

Hurlers lose to St Mary’s

For the first time since 2004 we were taking part in the senior hurling championship on our own, that is without any Gortletteragh or Mohill players. It was good to see four hurling teams in the senior hurling championship, the best for a few years. However, it was a difficult task facing nine-in-a-row champions, St Mary’s, who are now the Crossmaglen of Leitrim hurling. We had a bad first half and were down by 2-11 to 0-2 at half time. Our only scores coming from Kevin O’Connor and a Morgan Quinn free. The second half was a lot better and while we only improved our scoring to three points, two frees from Adrian Smith and Morgan Quinn and a point from Éamon Walsh, we did hold St Mary’s to just five points. The big problem was lack of match practice and training.

One positive about it was that we had about 24 players in attendance. It is intended to play a B hurling, as was done up to last year, so hopefully we might get another game or two.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Gavin Brennan, Paul Earley, Damien Gilheaney, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Liam Ferguson, Kevin O’Connor  (0-1), Morgan Quinn (0-2), Fergal Earley, Adrian Smith (0-1), Vincent Mulvey, Tommy McCormack, Adrian Gallogly, Trevor Martin. Subs used: Shane Flanagan, Éamon Walsh (0-1), Finnian Sharpley, James Gallagher
Under 12 Championship

The under 12 final fell with the weather but was played on Tuesday night. Report next week.

Junior C Championship

We were beaten by Gortletteragh in our final group game in the Junior C Championship on Saturday. We had a bad first half when we failed to score at all while Gortletteragh got 0-7. The second half was much better and we really dominated it but just didn’t get enough scores. It finished 1-12 to 2-5. The position is that we are still in the semi-final almost certainly against St Osnatts.

Foireann:  Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Ciarán Maxwell, Francis Dolan, John Galligan, Neil Hughes, Éamon Walsh, Seamus Donnelly, Ray Logan (1-2), Joe Murphy, Alan Prior, Adrian Murphy, Darren Reynolds, Daryl McFarland, Adrian Gallogly (1-1), Seán McCartin (0-2). Subs Peter Reynolds for D Reynolds, Ronan O’Rourke for Daryl McFarland

Training on Second Pitch only please.

All team mentors are asked to have all training on the second pitch from now until next April/May. Last weekend there were four matches on the main pitch and, while the weather was good, it did cut up the surface throughout the pitch. It is absolutely essential that the second pitch (or the small training area) is used for all training and for underage and games that do not require the full pitch. All mentors are asked to co-operate in this. The only use of the main pitch during the winter will be for full 15-a-side games.

O’Heslins Ladies played last game of the Season

The Sean O’Heslin’s Ladies played their last game of the season in the Intermediate B Championship Sunday last against Bornacoola.  The O’Heslins ladies open the score in the first half with a great goal.  Then Bornacoola started to get into the game and added some scores to the scoreboard.  In the second half of the game Bornacoola started off as the brighter team. Sean O’Heslins didn’t give up to easily and fought hard right to the end.  We had some great chances, hitting the cross bar two or three times.  We were very unlucky to lose the game by a goal.  But a great team performance by all.

The Sean O’Heslins Ladies football has come to a close for this year.  When we look back on this year we have achieved a lot, winning the 9 a side League, League final, under 12s also won.  We still have one game left with the under 16 girls which may take place this Friday evening @ 6.30pm in Cloone.  Please come along and support the under 16 girls in the Final. The game finished Sean O’Heslins 3-3 to Bornacoola 2-9.  We wish Bornacoola the best of luck in the rest of the competition.

A special thanks to all the Sean O’Heslins Ladies for a great season as always.  The girls have worked so hard each and everyone of them and they are very proud to be a part of the Ladies team.  We had some new players who joined us this year, which has given us a great boost and we look forward to new members joining us next season.  Thanks to Ray O’Connor for his help all year long and to Gavin Brennan for helping us out to.  Also a big thanks to Veronica Smith for washing the jerseys for the girls after every game and having them ready for the next game.  Last but not least to Paddy Dolan for all his hard work during the year, he has great faith in the girls and he is very proud of each and everyone of them.  We hope to see Paddy back next year.  Another special thanks you to all our parents who have supported us in every game.

Team panel for the year: Niamh Smith, Aine Martin, Gillian Leyden, Kirby Gilgunn, Michelle Fanning, Claire Fanning, Katie Duignan, Sarah McLoughlin, Orla McWeeney, Ciara O’Dowd, Catherine Smith, Aoife Smith, Leighann Gallagher, Deborah Gilheaney, Lynda Harte, Aisling Duignan, Emma O’Dell, Rowena O’Rourke, Erin Gilheaney, Ciara Martin, Yasmin Green, Megan O’Connor, Rosemary McTague, Doireann Ni Rian, Róisín McTague, Maeve Murphy, Aisling Flaherty

Under 16 Girls Final

The Under 16 girls final may take place this Friday evening @ 6.30pm in Cloone.  Please keep an eye out for posters which will be put up around the town during the week.  Please come along and support the girls in the final.  Your support is important to us.

Painters wanted

Not budding Picassos or Da Vinci’s!!!. The new dressingrooms are now ready for painting and a team of ten volunteers started on the work last Saturday. It will take some time to get the work done so anyone that has ever used a paint brush or who can clean or scrub is asked to come to the Park on Saturday at 10,00am.

Trust Fund – Interest free loans

There has been a good response to date to our appeal to people to loan money to the club for a five-year period. However we would like to hear from more people who might be willing to help in this regard. The idea is that people will loan money to the club, interest free, and the money will be paid back after five years. With huge bank loans at the moment and a big interest bill to be met every year, money loaned in this way would save us large amounts of money yearly. Please contact Tom Burns, Conor Harte, Joey Smith or Adrian Smith if you can help.

The stand and dressingrooms complex is within weeks of being handed over and it really is impressive. The fitting out of the showers and electrical work is all that remains to be done.

Ballinamore Connections with 13th Guinness Asian Gaelic Games

Brendan Wisely writes the following form Singapore:

We have just finished a great Gaelic weekend in Malaysia, where over 130 games of football and Hurling were played. Alan Ryan from Ballinamore played an outstanding game of football for the Singapore A team who were unlucky to go down in the final to Hong Kong A. It’s Hong Kong second three-in-a-row, but it must be noted they had 2 inter county players on their team.

It was also great to bump into Hugh Gough  who made a 17 hr travel trip from the Middle East to line out in goals for the Arabian Celts, Hugh too was unlucky in the B final, but made some great saves, he told me it was the jet lag!!

On the ladies side, Tessa McGovern’s A team was unlucky to loose the Ladies A semi-final to the eventual winners Dubai, and the Men’s D team, of which I was member, narrowly lost to the hosts Malaysia in a great game of football.

It was nice to hear the Ballinamore club and players names being commented on during the live commentary by no other that Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, and to have Nicky Brennan, Uachtarán CLG meet the finalists in the A teams parade.

 Ballinamore man in Dubai

Last week I had an e-mail from a Hugh Gough in Dubai telling me about a forthcoming Gulf Gaelic Games in sunny Dubai from 23-24 January 2009 and looking for clubs interested in attending. I wondered was this our Hugh Gough from rainy Ballinamore and sure enough it is. In fact Hugh was in Malaysia this weekend playing in the Asian Games. It really is great to see so many Ballinamore and Leitrim players taking the great games of Ireland to foreign places. Cuireann sé gliondar croí orainn go bhfuil muintir Bhéal an Átha Móir ag imirt na cluichí Gaelacha ar fud na cruinne.
