Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is a developed by and released across all video game platforms in March 2005. Though originally slated for release in the fall of 2004, it was delayed until the following spring when it came out for the , , and . Handheld versions for the , and were also released. A port was planned, but later cancelled.
Chaos Theory is the third game in the series endorsed by novelist . As with previous entries in the franchise, Chaos Theory follows the activities of , an agent working for a covert-ops branch within the called "Third Echelon". The game has a significantly darker tone than its predecessors, featuring more combat and the option for Fisher to kill people he interrogates as opposed to simply knocking them out. As a result, it was the first Splinter Cell game to receive an M-rating by the ESRB, an assessment which has since been applied to all subsequent releases in the series. Actor reprised his role as Fisher, while Don Jordan returned from the original game to voice Third Echelon director Irving Lambert and returned as hacker and analyst Anna Grímsdóttir having both been replaced by and respectively in .
Chaos Theory was an instant commercial success, selling 2.5 million units across all platforms within a month of its release. The Xbox and PC versions of the game received near-universal acclaim from critics and fans alike; the GameCube and PlayStation 2 iterations were also released to generally positive reviews. named it the Xbox "Game of the Year" (2005) for its strong gameplay and lifelike graphics. A remastered HD edition was bundled with the first two games of the series as part of the for the , released on December 20, 2010. Another port titled Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D was released for the on March 25, 2011.
Engine and gameplay
The graphics in Chaos Theory feature a number of improvements, including the addition of , lighting, and . The game also features a number of major changes and improvements to the series' basic gameplay. Chaos Theory is also the first game in the Splinter Cell series to use .
Chaos Theory features refined stealth mechanics. In addition to the standard light bar, the game also features an aural monitor that measures the noise that Sam makes, along with the ambient noise of the environment. It is important for Sam to make less noise than his surroundings; otherwise, the enemy guards will hear him.
The AI detection has been altered as well. In former titles, after Sam would leave a certain area, the game would do a sweep of the previous area for all unconscious or dead bodies in a well-lit spot. If any were found, an alarm would be triggered. In Chaos Theory, the bodies have to be discovered by a patrolling guard or security camera in order to trigger an alarm. This enables players to leave bodies simply laying out in the open, and, as long as the player has eliminated all NPCs and disabled all cameras, no alarms will be triggered.
Being spotted by enemies will still trigger alarms, and alarms will still cause enemies to become more alert and combat-ready (such as causing them to wear and ). However, triggering too many alarms will no longer cause the game to end automatically. Even killing civilians or friendly soldiers may not cause Fisher to fail the mission, although doing so will at least cause Fisher to be seriously chastised by his superior, and cost him significantly in his mission score as well as cancelling certain mission objectives, such as tapping phonelines and locating .
Chaos Theory adds a to Sam's abilities. Sam can use the knife in multiple ways, such as threatening an enemy during an interrogation, killing an enemy in close-quarters combat, or piercing gas tanks on generators in order to aid in his stealth operations. Also, it no longer matters what direction Sam attacks from when using melee attacks, nor does it matter if enemies are aware of his presence, as opposed to earlier entries in the series where he had to attack from behind or on the side and the enemy could not be alerted to him in order to take them down in one hit. He also has the option of using lethal or non-lethal force when ending an interrogation, and with his close range attacks. As an expansion on Sam's ability to shoot while hanging upside down (introduced in Pandora Tomorrow), he can now choke down or break the neck of enemies below him. He also has the ability to pull people over railings while hanging off a ledge and throw bodies off of cliffs or over railings, even onto other guards. However, the ability to shoot around corners has been removed, although this is balanced by being able to switch the side of Sam's body the gun is on while in a firing position.
Fisher is now able to choose from one of three different equipment "kits." There is Redding's recommended kit, an assault kit, and stealth kit. Redding's Recommendation gives Sam an even balance between ammunition and non-lethal weaponry. Assault provides more ammunition at the expense of non-lethal weapons while the Stealth kit contains more non-lethal weaponry at the expense of brute force, lethal weaponry, and spare magazines. On missions where an objective is to cause no fatalities, the player is unable to choose the Assault option.
The returns with a new feature: the OCP (Optically Channeled Potentiator). When fired at certain electronics, the OCP can disable them for a limited time. Fisher can disable lights, security cameras, and more. If the device cannot be disabled, it will temporarily malfunction instead, such as causing the when attacking computer towers. When Fisher successfully disables the electronic device he aimed at, a green light appears on the pistol; if he misses, a red light appears. In both cases, Fisher must wait a period of time for the OCP to recharge and become ready for use again.
The returns with a multitude of new attachments, such as a that reduces recoil and increases accuracy, a launcher that fires , an undermount attachment for , and a prototype sniper attachment for long-range combat. The SC-20K now uses a that zooms to 1.5x magnification, while the allows from 1.5x to 3.5x magnification.
A large variety of non-lethal weaponry can be fired from the SC-20K launcher, such as the Sticky Camera, the Sticky Shocker, the Airfoil Round, and Gas Grenade. The Sticky Camera will reveal an image of the area in which it was shot. In addition, it can make a clicking sound which will attract enemies, and also emit a that will render unconscious any enemies in the immediate area. In contrast to former titles Sam can now use multiple cameras at the same time. He can switch back to any Sticky Camera that has not been destroyed by using the attack or due to enemy fire. The Sticky Shocker will shock and incapacitate its target when fired. If shot into a body of , the shocker will incapacitate all targets in the water. The Airfoil Round is a hollow metal ring that will knock out the target. It is still possible for an unconscious enemy to die if shot, dropped from a considerable height or dropped into water, no matter how shallow.
Fisher also has multiple types of grenades. There is the Gas Grenade, which emits a cloud of that knocks enemies unconscious, the , which provides Fisher with a cloud of smoke to hide in, the , which will temporarily blind and deafen any enemy near it, and the , which will kill any enemy within its blast radius, and send objects flying in all directions.
In June 2007, tensions are running high between , , and , due to Japan's formation of an (I-SDF). Considering this to be a violation of of the post-World War II , and blaming the I-SDF for information warfare attacks against their countries, Chinese and North Korean forces establish a blockade in the against Japanese shipping. Because Japan is an ally of the United States, and thus the 's , the dispatches a highly advanced warship, the , to the Yellow Sea with the hopes that China and North Korea will back down at its presence.
Meanwhile, is dispatched to a lighthouse on the coastline, to locate Bruce Morgenholt, an American computer programmer who has been captured by a Peruvian separatist group called "The People's Voice", led by El Salvadorian revolutionary, Hugo Lacerda. Morgenholt was working on deciphering Phillip Masse's weaponized , who had been assassinated by Fisher (in ). The resulting Masse Kernels are being touted as the of the 21st century. Fisher is tasked with making sure they do not fall into the wrong hands. He arrives too late to prevent Morgenholt's death and is unsuccessful in stopping the release of the Masse Kernels. Fisher boards the Maria Narcissa and assassinates Lacerda. Unknown parties use the algorithms to black out Japan and the . Japan has previously suffered similar attacks that crashed its economy, and Admiral Otomo of the I-SDF contacts Third Echelon and warns them that North Korea and China are likely responsible. Meanwhile, following a lead discovered in Panama, Fisher travels to New York to investigate Abrahim Zherkhezi, a man who worked with Morgenholt. He finds that Displace International, a owned by his old friend , is protecting Zherkhezi. He breaks into the Displace offices and learns of Milan Nedić, a Bosnian arms supplier and criminal. Fisher finds that Nedić secretly relocated Zherkhezi to . Fisher travels to Hokkaido and meets with Shetland, who claims that Nedić is clean; Fisher infiltrates the hideout that Zherkezi is being held in, kills Nedić, and witnesses Shetland murdering Zherkezi. Shetland escapes and goes underground.
Meanwhile, the American show of force backfires when the USS Clarence E. Walsh is sunk by a North Korean on July 4, 2007, bringing North Korea, South Korea, and the United States to the brink of war. Since North Korea claims the missile was launched unintentionally, Fisher is sent to the North Korean missile battery that fired the missile, to determine if North Korea is truly responsible for sinking the USS Walsh, or if the Masse Kernels are involved. Fisher discovers that the North Koreans were indeed telling the truth, however, North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea. Fisher heads to Seoul, and eventually learns that the war has been orchestrated by Displace International. Displace used the Masse Kernels gained from Zherkhezi to hijack North Korea's missile systems and sink the USS Walsh, in order to draw the United States into a war from which Shetland could profit through their status as a leading American PMC. Third Echelon sends Fisher to spy on a meeting between Shetland and Shetland's unknown accomplices, who turn out to be the I-SDF. At the meeting, the I-SDF betray Shetland, and a firefight subsequently breaks out between Shetland's soldiers and I-SDF assault troops. Amidst the chaos, Fisher pursues Shetland to the roof, where, after a tense standoff in which Shetland tests their friendship against American security, he kills Shetland.
Even after Shetland's death, one loose end remains. Admiral Otomo of the I-SDF has acquired a copy of the Masse Kernels from Shetland, and attempts to return Japan to Imperial rule by blackmailing Japanese government officials and senior JSDF officers. He threatens to use the algorithms to launch a North Korean missile against a Japanese city. Because North Korea would be supported by China, and Japan would be backed by the United States, the incident would most certainly spark . Although Otomo's loyalist I-SDF soldiers manage to fight off the sent to stop him, Fisher infiltrates the lowest levels of the I-SDF headquarters and manages to end Otomo's plans. Otomo attempts to commit , but Fisher saves his life and captures him. Otomo stands trial at the and takes full responsibility for the entire Korean crisis, returning stability to the region.
Chaos Theory features competitive and cooperative multiplayer. The cooperative mode expands play by allowing for two agents to play through a unique 7 mission story mode which parallels the single player campaign. It is playable via system link, or over . The cooperative campaign follows the story of two Splinter Cells in training, merely known as Agent One and Agent Two. Their training is interrupted when a world crisis occurs that requires the Shadownet division of N.S.A. to deploy additional resources, even including agents not fully trained. The missions become a trial by fire for the two new agents. Though players can operate alone, the level design is such that it encourages teamwork. Ubisoft eventually developed two additional levels for download for the PC and Xbox versions. The Nuclear Plant and UN Headquarters missions are meant to end the story for the cooperative component.
In Splinter Cell Chaos Theory VS mode, two additional game play modes have been added to the game. New game modes include disk hunt, which consists of spies grabbing disks placed throughout the level, then returning the disks to their extraction point. The other game mode is death match, which consists of killing players on the opposite team-spies or mercenaries.
The (Shadownet) Spy vs. (ARGUS) Mercenary game mode returns from Pandora Tomorrow with many improvements. These include new gadgets for both teams, cooperative moves for the spy team, and improved close quarters combat for the mercenaries. Spies are armed with non-lethal weaponry so they rely on stealth, skill, and gadgets. Spies can only kill mercenaries by breaking their necks, dropping on them, and hanging from a ledge and pulling him down. The spies' gadgets also do not generally affect other spies. Mercenaries are the heavily armed enemies of the SHADOWNET spies. They deal in tracking and lethal techniques. They are more limited in terms of where they can go. For example, they can't climb poles, fences, or even rails. In addition to their equipment, mercenaries are physically tough and pack quite a punch with melee attacks.

Chaos Theory – Splinter Cell 3 Soundtrack is the fifth album by Brazilian artist . It was released on 25 January 2005 by . Seminal composer was also hired to score the game's cinematics.
The album consists of a collection of songs that Tobin wrote for the game. was so pleased with Tobin's work that they decided to release the album several months ahead of the actual game. In-game music sequences are similar but not identical to the official soundtrack, as most of the in-game music is produced by layering different sequences together. This album showcased the beginning Tobin's shift from collecting samples from records to recording his own samples. For the recording of Chaos Theory – Splinter Cell 3 Soundtrack, Tobin hired a live band whose members ranged from Mexican composer to Japanese flutist . In the of the CD, Tobin noted that "it was a real special session" to have Mendez, Eiji, and the Modugno brothers working on the album. Tobin would more fully explore the use of his own samples by using in his 2007 album, .
The Xbox and PC versions of Chaos Theory received "universal acclaim", and the PlayStation 2, N-Gage and GameCube versions received "favorable" reviews, while the 3DS and DS versions received "mixed" reviews, all according to video game . A 2013 IGN review described Chaos Theory as a "peak" in the series. Shawn Elliott of gave the Xbox version an A and said that it "isn't the cruel, ball-busting taskmaster of Splinter Cells past—the exacting details don't matter so long as the duties get done, and it's a better game because of it." Rob Semsey of gave the game 9.8 out of 10 and said, "The formula has been tweaked to an almost perfect mix of story and engrossing gameplay that still requires more use of brain over brawn... The presentation is off the charts with mesmerizing visuals and audio production, both of which have a major impact on how you play." gave the game a score of eight out of ten and said it was "the game that the original Splinter Cell was meant to deliver: a tight play experience within a trusty framework, one more of enjoyment than irritation, and a game that's no longer exclusively for fans of repeated reloading." In Japan, gave the Xbox version a score of three eights and one seven, bringing it to a total of 31 out of 40; for the PS2 version, the same magazine gave it two eights, one seven, and one six, bringing it to a total of 29 out of 40.
Avery Score of gave the mobile version a score of 8.6 out of 10 and called it "a terrific game in its own right, even if it doesn't stray far from the established formula." Likewise, Levi Buchanan of gave the same version a score of 8.8 out of 10 and said it was "definitely not a one-touch game. It's complex, but Gameloft's control scheme and pacing compensate for the limited input of a handset. Gameloft rarely stumbles with their offerings, and Chaos Theory is no exception. When it pops up on your deck, download it. Your may get that familiar feeling, but that's certainly oodles better than that rot-gut anger you feel after downloading a stinker."
Non video-game publications gave the game some favorable reviews. gave the game a perfect ten and stated: "No longer is there just one way to solve a treacherous night mission before the enemy picks up your audio signature: stealth will pay off just as well as good old-fashioned ultraviolence." gave the Xbox, PC and PS2 versions all five stars and called it "Visually spectacular and hugely rewarding." However, the same newspaper also gave the DS version half of that score (two-and-a-half stars) and said that the frustration "is compounded by the choppy, stuttering frame rate of the 3D visuals, making the already convoluted controls feel twice as sluggish. Even the menu screens seem slow to respond - a sure sign that the DS is being pushed beyond its capabilities." gave the game a favorable review and stated that "Perhaps Sam is just getting older, perfecting his skills while losing some feistiness. His games are following the same path, with increasingly sophisticated, deep gameplay but a little less flair." Jim Schaefer of gave the Xbox version three stars out of four, stating, "I'll reserve a four-star rating for the next time this series takes big leaps. In this latest edition, there's nothing so new that you'll stop and say, 'Whoa.' But Chaos Theory is true to the things that make Splinter Cell games so good."
Due to the fact that this game depicts a war between and , it was banned in South Korea until 2006.

Have your sniper zoomed-in on the guard. When there is a fight, shoot, run, and catch Shetland. Then, end the mission.
Taking lights out silently
To take out lights silently, first OCP the light, then shoot it.
When you see Otomo try to commit suicide, Lambert will radio you and say something. If playing on the normal difficulty setting he will say something similar to "Otomo just tried to commit sepuku. Get in there and revive him". However, if you play the game on the hard difficulty setting, Sam will say something similar to "Looks like someone feels a bit too good about himself." However, all the objectives will remain the same.
Do not trigger the alarm in Bank
Normally when you are on the last part of the Bank level and take the ,000,000 from the cell, you will trigger the alarm when you walk out. There are three ways to avoid this. The first is to eliminate every guard in the bank. When the alarm goes off, no one will come because they are either dead or knocked out. The second way is useful if your trying to get a good rating without sounding alarms. When you take the money, do not walk out. Turn on your heat vision and you can see the laser. Then, turn on your goggles to where you can see the electronics. The laser should be on your left. Use the secondary fire on your pistol to disable it, then quickly run out of the cell. For the third way, make sure there are guards remaining and before you take the money, there is a computer terminal. Open the door and turn on the sprinklers. Wait for them to turn them off and the whole chamber and the path to get into the chamber will be wet all the way to the narrow hallway. Take the money and trigger the alarm. Take out your sticky shockers and wait for the group of men to stand in the puddle. Make sure you are not seen or the guards will run for cover. Then, shock them.
Invisible laser beam in Bank
To avoid detection by the invisible laser trip wire in the entrance of the vault, closely examine the entrance with your thermal goggles on. Then, use your OCP to disable the laser emitter and walk out of the vault. By doing this, you can leave without sounding the alarm.
Finding the bombs in Bathhouse
After going through the gate when chasing Shetland, the first bomb is directly to the left of the gate that you enter. Go left through a little crevice and you should see a red light flashing. Go to it and disarm it. When you do that, one of Shetland's gaurds will walk up the stairs. Kill him. To get to the second bomb, go up the stairs. Turn left then turn right and look straight ahead. You should see another red flashing light down below the walkway. Hop over the ledge of the railing and disarm the second bomb. When you are done disarming the bomb, jump on to the railing and pull yourself up. Two guards will be to your left, walking on the walkway. They will probably hear you; get ready to kill them. It is fairly difficult to kill them without losing a lot of life, or at least dying. After you kill them, go down the walkway to the back wall. About halfway you will see another red flashing light. Jump across the little gap and disarm it. A guard will come through the back door right when you disarm the bomb. Kill him, then go through the door and meet Shetland. You will then have to make a critical choice; pull the trigger. Note: It would be a good idea to quicksave the game whenever you disarm and kill the guards.
Alternate Shetland Death in Bathhouse
At the end of the level, Shetland and Sam will be on top of a roof with their guns pointed at each other. After a short conversation, Shetland will put his gun away and say "You wouldn't shoot an old friend". You are given a choice, shoot or put your gun away. If you shoot, Shetland will stumble backwards and the intermission sequence for the level's ending will play. However if you put your gun away, Shetland will quickly pull his gun out and point it at Sam. Sam will duck his weapon and stab Shetland in the stomach before throwing him. This will then start the same ending sequence.
Man goes to wrong location in Hokkaido
When you are at the place where you must scan the license plate, make sure that you first have blown out the candle and destroyed the guard inside. When you go outside you will see a man leaning on the car. Stand beside the car on the left and whistle. If done correctly, he will not come to the place that you have whistled to, but instead he will go inside the hut.
Alternate way to retrieve the radio data in Lighthouse
During the mission you will have to overhear some data being said on a radio transmission by a guard. If you fail to do this, you can just find the data in a filing cabinet next to the radio.
Get rid of the enemy on the top in Lighthouse
To get rid of the enemy on the top of the lighthouse, hang along the edge of the lighthouse. Get underneath him and select the command "Grab NPC". Sam Fisher will grab and throw him off the edge. From here you can watch him scream and fall to his death.
Bouncing guard in Penthouse
On the ground floor after you have knocked out two guards (the one who is repairing the elevator and the other one that is talking to him), put one or more of the guards in the elevator with Sam. Sam must turn on his night vision and press the button to go to the top floor. Watch the guard's body bounce around like popcorn.
Original Splinter Cell music in Seoul
When you begin the level, you will be in a kid's room. Immediately exit the room and go to the right. When you reach the end of the hall, in which the walls are blown away, turn to the right and enter a half-destroyed room. There should be a radio inside. Turn it on, and it will play the same music from the cafe from where you started near the Chinese Embassy 2 level on the original Splinter Cell.
Destroying the tank in Seoul
In the final area of the second part of the mission, you can rescue the injured pilots as a bonus objective. However, instead of waiting for the lamp to flicker on and off to get past the tank safely, there is an easier way. Make sure you have a frag greanade (obtained elsewhere in the level). Go to the very top of the scaffolding and take out the frag grenade. Aim the grenade to go in the hatch of the tank. If done correctly, the grenade will explode in the tank, which will destroy it.
See inside Sam's head
In the final level, go through the second checkpoint. There will be two guards talking in a room; one behind a desk and the other in front. Once you go through the two sheets used as a door, to your left will be a bench. Jump on it. Then, stand up so that you are not crouching and move the camera behind you. You will then be able to see inside of Sam's head.
Bill Gates reference in Hokkaido
There are two guards talking about their new vehicle. During the conversation, one says that it has a 640 gig MP3 player, "standard." The other replies that no one will ever need 640 gigs. This is a jab at a comment made by Bill Gates back in 1981 about no one ever needing more than 640 K of RAM.
Metal Gear Solid reference in I-SDF Base
When you get to the lower floors in the I-SDF base, interrogate a guard. Sam will ask him about his LTL (less-than-lethal) weapon. The guard will tell Sam that the ammunition is some kind of electric round. Sam asks where he can find some. To this the guard replies: "It's not like you can shake me, and make my ammo drop on the floor". This is a reference to the Metal Gear Solid games, in which you can do just that.
Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within reference in Displace International
When infiltrating Displace International, Sam will encounter two guards talking about Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within. It is in the small cafe next to a laser filled hallway, past a keypad locked door. A second way to access the room is through a vent. However because Sam is inside the vent, the conversation becomes difficult to hear.
Splinter Cell reference in Bathhouse
You must go through the warm baths at one point in the level. There are two guards here. Interrogate one of them and he will tell you that Shetland's elite guards have thermal goggles. He will also add that they will not do much good in steam, because steam is not fog, as in an abbatoir. This is a reference to the original Splinter Cell game, in which Abbatoir is a level.
Splinter Cell reference in Hokkaido
After you scan Milon Nedich's liscence plate and enter the building, you will overhear some guards talking about ninjas. One will be telling the other that he was stationed on an oil rig and that it was attacked by a ninja. This is a reference to the first Splinter Cell in which Sam is the ninja.
Splinter Cell reference in I-SDF Base
You can overhear a couple of guards talking in the main hall. One will say something about how guarding the place is just like guarding the CIA HQ; nobody would break in there. This is a reference to the original Splinter Cell, in which you must break into CIA headquarters.
Note: This procedure involves editing a game file; create a backup copy of the file before proceeding. If you're like me, you've enjoyed the first two installments of the Splinter Cell series enough to suspend disbelief that it's possible to routinely sneak up on people without being noticed - while indoors. That's a lot of disbelief suspension, and is testament to how fun it can be skulking around in high-tech gear, saving the world one silent victory at a time. In Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Ubisoft has offered Splinter Cell fans a third go at Sam's stealthy style, but there just isn't enough fresh material here to overcome the stale feeling of "been there, done that."
On the surface there are some new moves, and you've got a knife now, but it makes no difference in terms of game play. You approach some fabric, an option appears to cut the fabric, you walk through. It's just another mouse click, no different than, "Open Door." A statistical assessment of your performance is calculated after each mission, with points deducted for setting off alarms, killing guards or failing to complete secondary goals. I kept getting really low ratings until I realized that a captured guard is killed with a left-click, knocked unconscious with a right-click. The animations aren't particularly helpful in revealing this distinction, and I now find myself drenched in the virtual karma of a serial murderer.
A "Loadout" feature at the start of each mission is a weak attempt at providing some customization to various play styles, as there's rarely much need to use the different equipment you've selected. In fact, grabbing a guard from behind is the only way to initiate an interrogation, so using the equipment you're provided is actually discouraged. Maps have the already-overused crawlspace/pipe/elevator pathing that I suppose gives some a sense that options abound, but in my experience these have always been more about what you notice first rather than which gameplay style your prefer. A bank entry through an unlocked dome light is particularly ridiculous as the rope you rappel down was already hanging from the ceiling, right over the teller's area!
Chaos Theory's graphics are quite the mixed bag. For those who choose shader model 2.0, there's no antialiasing - a major bummer. AA is a must for me, as I'm playing on a native 1024x768 projector at 90 inches, so the screenshots you'll see here are all shader model 1.1. And what's the deal with the many faces of Sam? Here's some shots of various versions of our hero: () () (). If you consider what Ubisoft is planning for Sam's , it gets even more bizarre. Did the artists even share notes?
One huge improvement is the elimination of the checkpoint system, whereby the player is prevented from advancing due to previously-unhidden bodies. You still need to hide the bodies, but only if they are likely to be discovered by nearby patrols. These patrols have even more dialogue options now, and combined with their behavioral AI, one can feel a decent sense of immersion while playing cat-and-mouse with the NPCs. This is the real appeal of the Splinter Cell series and, happily, the game is as strong as ever here. A series of instructional videos are informative and fun to watch -- I hope to see more of this tutorial style in the future.
Audio in Chaos Theory is as mixed as the graphics. Michael Ironside's excellent vocals as Sam Fisher are in stark contrast to Dany Wells' laughable attempt as the gruff ship captain Arthur Partridge. The sound track gets the job done professionally, but really doesn't justify Amon Tobin's bio in the "Extras" area, or make unlocking his tracks much of a pull. (Granted, musical taste is completely subjective, but Jon Hallur's work for or the wonderfully-effective inclusion of Barber's Agnus Dei in Homeworld are more what I consider worthy of such attention.)
Playing the third installment of anything runs the risk of becoming rote, and sometimes more of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ubisoft has a good thing going with this series and they certainly don't want to mess it up. Those who enjoyed the first two Splinter Cell games will most likely enjoy Chaos Theory, but for the third time out I would have enjoyed a bit more innovation and a lot less repetition.

The Cisco DPC3825 router has a basic firewall that helps to protect your home network from unwanted access from the Internet. This firewall blocks incoming connections that you may want unblocked for various reasons. The process of unblocking these ports is called a .
Here in this guide, we walk you through each step in the port forwarding process. We will show you how to:
Setting up a static IP address on the device or computer you want ports forwarded to.
Logging into your Cisco DPC3825 router.
How to navigate to the port forwarding section.
Click the Applications & Gaming link.
Click on Port Range Forwarding.
Finally, how to make a port forward entry.
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created .
Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
Recommended - Our free program will setup a static IP address for you.
Or follow our guide to setup a static IP address.
It is time to login to the Cisco DPC3825. To do this you must open a web browser because the router uses what is called a web interface. It shouldn't matter what browser you decide to use, simply pick your favorite such as: Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, or Safari.
After opening the web browser, look for the address bar. This is normally at the top of the page like this:
Do you see the address bar in the image above? It has 192.168.0.1 in it. Simply replace what is in this bar with the IP address of the Cisco DPC3825 router.
(Sometimes the IP address is referred to as the computer's default gateway)
If you have changed the router's IP address in the past, and you don't remember what you changed it to, check out our guide.
By default the Cisco DPC3825 IP address is set to: 192.168.0.1
After you have finished entering the IP address into the address bar, click the Enter key on your keyboard. You should now be asked for authentication:
You should see a login screen for the Cisco DPC3825 router.
The default Cisco DPC3825 router username is: cusadmin
The default Cisco DPC3825 router password is: password
Go ahead and enter the router's username and password into the appropriate boxes, then press Log In.
This is a common place to get stuck. Here are a few ideas to get you logged in:
First of all, we recommend trying other common Cisco passwords. Sometimes a slightly different firmware version will have a different username and password. Check out our list of here.
If that did not work, it is probably because you changed the username and password in the past and can't remember what you changed it to. We suggest trying to crack it with the help of our . This application only works on your local network and it automates the process of guessing thousands of different combinations. Learn more about this on the
Finally, if nothing else seems to work, it might be time to consider a reset. This is not recommended unless you have exhausted all other troubleshooting methods. If this is something you need to consider, read our guide.
This third step involves finding the port forwarding section of your router. To do that, let's start on the Status page like this:
From this page, you need to click the Applications & Gaming link at the top of the page in blue.
Under that a new menu appears. Select the option of Port Range Forwarding.
If you are on the page you see above, you are on the correct page.
Time to enter data into your router. We want to show you exactly what to enter, so we need a little more information from you:
(Make sure the IP address above matches the Static IP Address you setup in Step 1)
Below is our router simulator. It shows you exactly what data to enter in order to get your ports forwarded. Currently we are showing the ports for XBox Live. If this is correct, simply fill out the boxes in your router as you see them below.
When you are finished, click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page.
Are Your Ports Open?
It is now time to check your work. Did the ports open correctly? To test this we recommend using our . This is part of our free trial version of the tool. This particular Open port checker is free and guaranteed to work for you because it uses a local application.

One of the biggest limitations of Google Home, Google’s voice-controlled speakerbot, was that it couldn’t tell anyone apart so all your requests were centered on one Google account. But , now it can recognize up to six people.
That’s a pretty big deal for a device that’s supposed to be a central part of your home. Previously, if you asked it to do something like read your agenda it would only be able to refer to a calendar for a single Google account. Which means that your family, friends, partners, dogs, and cats would all have to share the same calendar if more than one person wanted to use the device. Today’s update lets you add up to six people so that everyone can talk to the Home and actually get personalized responses. I wouldn’t expect perfection, though; you train it by repeating the phrase “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” a few times, but inevitably it will probably confuse people’s voices.
Confusing different voices isn’t that big of a deal because Google is still pretty skittish about actually doing things to your Google account through the device. Reasonably so; you don’t want anyone within earshot to send emails on your behalf. Having multiple accounts would especially complicate such features, but hopefully future updates will make the device able to actually do more.
